Inside Out

Karolina Baker, Alicia Hrvatin, Helen Iskander, Nadine Chantal LeClerc, Lisa Subryan

COVID-19 affected the world and with no surprise artists continued to work during the pandemic. Here is what came out of eighteen months of isolation, in home studios, scavenging supplies and doing what artists do: reacting to the times. This exhibition welcomes viewers to experience how these five artists experienced the inside during the pandemic.

Being inside, or in isolation is the thread that links the five artists featured in this exhibition. The inside can also be understood as how these artists felt on the inside

Alicia Hrvatin looks to the past with her video, comparing the current pandemic with the Spanish Influenza. The work aims to disorient the viewer, mirroring Alicia’s experience during the pandemic.

Karolina Baker records the sound of a hockey practice, days before the province closed all recreational facilities; their closing creating an eerie silence within all community hubs. Baker’s abstract paintings reveal a hyper-observation of home during isolation.

Helen Iskander shares her investigation into loneliness with her painting, which fits appropriately into the COVID conversation, as studies are showing young adults have been the hardest hit by loneliness due to the pandemic.

Lisa Subryan takes us on a journey with her COVID walking map, using food as a medium to highlight the disruption of the supply chain and access to art supplies.

Nadine Chantal Leclerc’s drawings present us with the psychological impact of the pandemic and remind us that it was a nightmare for many people. Leclerc also looks boldly into the future with another drawing and proposes a solution for any future land based viruses: humans should investigate inhabiting the sky.

This exhibition presents these artists’ reflection on the past, present and future of global pandemics whilst on the inside. This exhibition can also be found online as an homage to the year of virtual learning. These artists acknowledge the global pandemic continues and not everyone is able to physically access the campus gallery.
